Panera Bread - Starbucks - Your portable office

It is said the only constant is change.  That's true.  Walk into any Starbucks, Panera Bread or local coffee shop any time their doors are open and the coffee is brewing.  You'll see business professionals with laptops and cell phones conducting business.  They are probably not considered big business, but it is business and they are making a living.

Economists will tell you that small businesses (in total) employ more people and have a greater contribution to our GNP.  They are not, however, the company names that are making the news during bad times; nor are they the companies making the news during good times.  They operate just below the news radar screen.  I'm familiar with small business and its challenges.

I grew up in rural Wyoming where I was first introduced to small business success at home.  My parents owned a grocery store and the post office was in the back corner.  It was the hub of the community.  I also remember when they paved the road to the main highway into Cheyenne, Wyoming and the first Safeway store was built there.  It was only a few short months later that my parents knew they had to sell the store inventory because we were no longer the go-to-place for groceries.  It was now Safeway in Cheyenne.  Our lives went in a new direction - to a new town for us - - Cheyenne.  But our lives went forward and, in the end, it was a good move.  The move was not easy - but the results were worth it.

The world of work is facing a tsunami wave of change.  There will be casualties (job title, job location, company name); but there will be opportunity as well.  If you (or someone you know) is facing this tsunami, do not let feelings of despair overwhelm you (or them).    First, go to job advice sites like this one :):):).  Write down all the positive advice that fits your situation and develop a day-to-day game plan.  Then each morning be sure you follow that plan.
