There are many websites devoted to finding a job, acing the interview and advice on how to look for a job while you have a job. I've only seen one or two sites devoted to finding a job in the world of non-profits. And, for the record, much of what you'll readin this blog is based on my recent attendance at two conferences focused on 1) small foundations and/or 2) regionally located foundations.
What I came away with is a deeper understanding of the impact foundations are making in the lives of millions of people - every day - on all continents.
If you are early into your career and know you enjoy helping others - but do not want to be a nurse or work in the field of medicine - - look into the world of non profits. You may have to do some sleuthing in your local community - but I've discovered it is a world where "collaboration" is an integral part of their world and they willingly share information and resources. In addition, there are websites such as Opportunity Knocks which will help you navigate what may be uncharted waters for many job seekers.
While at the Association of Small Foundation Conference in Austin, I heard from people associated with foundations that are changing lives. Here's a few - to give you an understanding of the breadth/depth of giving and the impact it has on lives:
A Glimmer of Hope - dedicated to helping Ethiopians have potable water - the first step in survival and stability for individuals and nations.
Acciontexas - a lending institution that makes micro-loans and as a result gives someone a hand-up not a hand-out. I know, from my work through Rotary International's micro-loan programs, that a small amount of money (by most standards) can be a life-changing investment for someone in a third-world or developing country.
Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas - a private, faith-based, not-for-profit organization providing medical and health-related human services to low income families and the uninsured in South Texas.
Tracy Family Foundation- a multi-generational family that seeks to proactively impact the world through works of the foundation.
To learn more about small foundations and their impact - go to the Association of Small Foundations webpage.
More importantly - get involved - if not as a career move - as a volunteer and make a difference. You will be rewarded while helping others.
