Here's the late breaking Career Coach news as reported in The Oklahoman today. Featured are yours truly, Jack Chapman and Penelope Trunk. The article site is: http://newsok.com/article/3250812/. Jack Chapman's at : www.salarynegotiations.com; Penelope Trunk's at www.penelopetrunk.com. We each have our specialty, and our own opinions, based on our experience working with clients. The advice is on-target and thought-provoking. While you may not agree with everything we say, you will find information that is useful for your career search.
If you're fired up, or enthusiastic, in your career search, you are much more likely to be successful. Only rarely, are grumpy, down-in-the-mouth professionals hired. Why? A study done by Harvard Business Review found that people would rather work with someone who's incompetent and likable, while competent, unlikable people "start looking incompetent because people hate them so much. That's a strong statement, but it is true.
Jack gives you excellent salary negotiation advice in his book "Negotiating your Salary: How to make a $1,000 a Minute". Interestingly, Jack discovered that a survey which should women MBA's grads only made 79 cents for every dollar men were paid was largely due to the fact women did not negotiate.
Penelope tells it straight. If you have a bad boss, cut them some slack. See if you can't make their life on the job a little easier. It may change their attitude. Frequently, bosses who are jerks are usually just scared or in over their heads.
Ouch!!! Penelope also suggested plastic surgery. Okay - - I have to think about that one. However, she makes a point worth considering.
